European Media Freedom Conference 2016 has ended

The 2nd European Media Freedom Conference is taking place at the Media Campus Villa Ida (Leipzig School of Media) of Media Foundation of Sparkasse Leipzig.

After our inaugural conference in 2015 the this year´s focus is on the topic of "working together for independent journalism – powerful journalism networks".

The conference wraps up a series of major press freedom events in 2016. Set against the backdrop of newly-elected governments, restrictive media legislation and multifaceted threats to journalists across Europe, the conference provides insight in the current debates on freedom of expression and independent journalism.

Speakers and participants from all over Europe and a variety of backgrounds (such as media law, academia, independent media outlets, the political sphere etc.) will contribute to the discussions, making the conference the "place to be" for an update on press and media freedom this autumn.

Attending organisations are: ECPMF, Osservatorio Balcani e Caucaso (OBC), Journalismfund.eu, Ossigeno per l´ Iinformazione, South East Europe Media Organisation (SEEMO), Index on Censorship and many others.

The conference language is English.

Tickets can be bought via Eventbrite on this page (see link below).
Please check our conference page for venue and further details https://2016.ecpmf.eu/

Call for solidarity action for Turkish journalists

Sign up or log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

The European Media Freedom Conference 2016 shows its solidarity with all imprisoned journalists in Turkey, in a session supported by the Friedrich Naumann Foundation.

Turkey's state of emergency has resulted in the imprisonment and enforced exile of more than 100 journalists. Platform 24 exists to support them, and founder member Yavuz Baydar tells their stories, revealing the human cost of President Erdogan's actions.

The European Union meanwhile has done a deal with Turkey to resolve the refugee situation, and offered visa liberalisation for Turks as part of their ongoing candidacy for EU membership. This political contradiction flies in the face of European values.

At the end of Yavuz Baydar's presentation we launch our spectacular solidarity action in support of Turkish journalists. For every journalist behind bars, we have a balloon and a postcard urging: 'Free the journalists' and all together as a media freedom community we will release the balloons in a video and photo opportunity that will be carried around the world by international news organisations.
